UNIT 2: CellsStem Cell Research — Potential Solutions, Practical Challenges

Embryonic Stem Cells

A news program asks viewers to vote online: "Should stem cell research be banned? Yes or no?" Some people claim that stem cell therapy will revolutionize medicine. Others believe that some types of stem cell research violate ethical standards and are not justified by the potential benefits. Between these two positions exists a wide range of ideas about what is or is not acceptable. Would you know how to vote?

Using Stem Cells

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can regenerate themselves and develop into specialized types of cells. Stem cell research offers the hope of understanding basic cell processes and treating or even curing many dreaded diseases. However, a lot of technical challenges must be overcome before stem cell therapy is a realistic option, and ethical issues continue to surround stem cell research.

Potential Benefits

Stem cell research offers many potential benefits.

  • Studying adult stem cells may help scientists better understand how tissues develop and what goes wrong when those tissues become diseased.
  • A better understanding of the properties of stem cells may give scientists more information about how cancer cells replace themselves and thus helps scientists develop more targeted cancer therapies.
  • Stem cells could be used to grow human tissues to test the effects of drugs and chemicals.
  • Stem cells may be used to replace healthy cells that are killed by radiation treatment for cancer.
  • Stem cells may be used to replace tissues. For example, chemotherapy kills blood-producing cells in bone marrow. Many chemotherapy patients have marrow taken before treatment that is later reinjected into the patient after treatment. However, the marrow could have cancer cells. The use of blood-producing stem cells in place of bone marrow transplants would remove this danger.

Technical Challenges

Researcher

This researcher is micro-injecting mouse stem cells into fertilized mouse eggs to be used in drug research.

Adult stem cells have been used therapeutically for years in the form of bone marrow transplants. Nevertheless, many technical challenges must still be overcome before stem cells can be used to treat a wide range of disorders. Examples are highlighted below.

Supply: Stem cells can be taken from a variety of sources, including an embryo, a patient, a patient’s relative, or an established stem cell line. Each source presents unique challenges. Established cell lines may seem like the obvious choice, but some scientists are concerned that these cells have built up a lot of mutations as they have undergone thousands of divisions.

Transplantation into the target area: The delivery of stem cells to targeted tissues can be complex, especially if the tissues are deep inside the body. And once delivered, stem cells must “learn” to work with other cells. For instance, inserted cardiac cells must beat in unison with a patient’s heart cells to be effective.

Prevention of rejection: Stem cells may be rejected if a patient’s body sees them as foreign. This problem can remain even when certain identifying proteins are removed from the cells’ membranes. The development of SCNT technology in humans could help solve this problem so that patients would not have to take drugs to suppress their immune system.

Suppression of tumor formation: By their very nature, stem cells remain undifferentiated and continue to divide for long periods of time. When transplanted into an organism, many embryonic stem cells tend to form tumors. This risk must be removed before they can be used therapeutically.

Unanswered Questions

Stem cell research and therapy do not only involve questions of what we can do. They also involve questions about what we should do, who should benefit, and who should pay.

  • Should human embryos be a source of stem cells?
  • How can scientists protect their work when patent laws vary from country to country?
  • How should stem cell research be funded?
  • How can the benefits of stem cell research best be shared by all people, regardless of income?
  • Should insurance cover costly stem cell procedures?

Setting Guidelines for Research

Who should control stem cell research? In 2001, ethical concerns prompted the U.S. government to set strict limits on the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. However, privately funded research continues. In 2005, the National Academy of Sciences issued voluntary guidelines for human embryonic stem cell research that included the following:

  • Embryo donors must give informed consent and not receive any payment.
  • Stem cells for research can be harvested from embryos only during the first 14 days of development.
  • Each institution conducting stem cell research should establish its own oversight committee.

Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer

Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), also called therapeutic cloning, is a method for obtaining stem cells that has been used to clone animals. The process is still under development, however, and it has not yet been used to produce human stem cells. SCNT offers the hope of using a patient’s own DNA to produce stem cells that can form many types of specialized cells. The use of stem cells that are genetically identical to a patient would decrease that person’s risk of cell rejection and the need for drugs to suppress the immune system. Many SCNT studies have been done in mice; the diagram to the right shows how the SCNT process might be applied in human cells.

  1. An unfertilized egg is taken from a female’s body, and the nucleus—containing the DNA—is removed. A cell is then taken from a patient’s body. The nucleus is removed and inserted into the egg.
  2. The egg is given a mild electrical stimulation, which makes it divide. The DNA comes from the patient’s nucleus, and the materials needed for division come from the egg.
  3. The stem cells could then be cultured and caused to differentiate into any tissue or organ needed by the patient.

Once a stem cell line is established, in theory it can continue to grow indefinitely. Researchers could use these cell lines without having to harvest more stem cells. The cell lines also could be frozen and shipped to other researchers around the world.

Dr. Gail Martin

Title: Professor, Anatomy, University of California, San Francisco
Education: Ph. D., Molecular Biology, University of California, Berkeley

In 1974 Dr. Gail Martin was working at the University College in London when she made a huge advance. She developed a way to grow stem cells in a petri dish. These fragile cells were hard to work with, so Dr. Martin’s breakthrough removed a big obstacle to stem cell research. Seven years later, she made another key discovery while working in her own laboratory at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) in her native United States—how to harvest stem cells from mouse embryos. Her work has helped other scientists develop ways to harvest stem cells from human embryos and explore their use in treating disorders.

Dr. Martin likes to point out that her work shows how small advances in basic biology can pay off years later in unexpected ways. She states that many people focus on cures for specific diseases, not realizing that these cures "may come from basic research in seemingly unrelated areas. What is really going to be important 20 years from now isn’t clear."

I think its a good idea to do stem cell research, because if you have a disease, like cancer, you can replace cells that are bad. i also like that you can help people who are in need of it by stem cells.

Looking at some of these comments, I saw some valid points. However, I still firmly believe that embryonic stem cell research is wrong. It's killing a baby. And for those of you who say that it's not alive yet, from the moment of conception, a baby has all 23 sets of human chromosoms. This makes it a living being. So it's bad if we kill the child without his/her consent just for existing in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, adult stem cell reseach is absolutely fine.

I believe that stem cell research is right as long as no one gets hurt in the process, as R. Thomson has said "I have no problem with miscarried embryos used". Though when someone is using/used stem cell research while hurting a living thing to do so is beyond wrong.

The use of stem cells is a 40-60 decision for me. The fact that they could be able to use it to replace cells that have been killed by chemotherapy is great but there is also the chance it could cause people tumors and have their bodies reject them, is a huge risk to me and it could put somebody in a worse condition then they already are.

I think it is a good idea to look into stem cell research, because if you have a disease, like cancer, you can replace the cells that are harmful. I agree the stem cell research should continue. Through research, it has achieved many benefits such as replace cells that are damaged. I think that the use of stem cell research should be allowed because it can further us in finding out more about the human body but no one should have to be forced to share their stem cell for research if they don’t want to and it should be them just coming forward and providing there stem cells for science if they want to. I thought it was interesting how stem cells can cure many diseases. Also that it can be used to replace tissue.

I think the study of adult stem cells should be allowed for future references. But we shouldn't kill a baby even if it does save millions of people. It's not fair for the baby and its family. Even if we do get the stem cells from the baby it'll cost too many problems, like who gets the stem cells, who has to donate it, and if insurance will cover it.

I think its a good idea for stem cell research to continue because in the future it could help a lot of people. I think this theory could be very useful because of the fact that scientist would be able to cure fatal diseases and that they maybe would be able to repair various types of tissues. Stem Cell Research seems to have done quite a bit of good for people... and cause a lot of controversy. The use of adult stem cells is a fine idea because the patient must consent to it. On the other hand, the use of embryonic stem cells doesn't seem... humane, no matter how I view it...

I think that stem cell research might be a benefit. I also think that it is a very cruel thing to do to a human being. A family should have a child because they want to love it and take care of it. Not to use it to help someone else. I mean, it can be benefitial and save lives, but people die and new people are born. It's the way of life.

Comment from: Julie Hubbell

The adult stem cell research seems really great. It does not have any real ethical questions because it all depends on consent. However, embryonic stem cell research seems unethical and unecessary. The fact that they "tend" to turn into tumors does not bode well for the whole system.

Comment from: Mary-Kate Gregory

March 17, 2011 11:45 AM [#]

The idea of stem cell research sounds good, however I feel that the risks outweigh the benefits. Using embryonic stem cells for personal use violates that developing child. It seems like a selfish idea taking from a child who has zero say or control over themselves. I would say, just stick to using adult stem cells, because it is solely that person's decision on whether someone can use their cells.

Comment from: Jessica Boger

March 17, 2011 04:24 PM [#]

Stem cell research can be beneficial in so many ways, but does the benefits really outweigh the probable consequences? Every child deserves to live life normally with every cell they need, Not have them taken away when they can't oppose it. Adults can agree to it, so adult stem cells are completely ok in my opinion, but take the cells from someone who can actually agree with it.

Stem cell research could help cure diseases but im not sure if its right to develope children using this technology. You could come up with many benifits from it so maybe it could be a good thing. I think stem cells can be used for good & bad situations. They can help cancer patients. Stem cells can make new cells programmed to do specific jobs. Bone marrow stem cells, for example, make red blood cells, which carry oxygen through the body.

I think that stem cell cell research would be useful in many different ways as long as it's not taken to far. It wouldn't be right to have it taken from an embryo. But if taken from and adult would be fine if they would consider themselves in that position. I would consider this if it helps save lives.

I Think that stem cell research is a good idea but also up to the person. If it's taken away from an Adult then it's fine if they say it's ok. But from unborn babies then it shouldn't be right. The outcome of stem cell research is very beneficial for people who need them. But not from unborn children.

I think stem cell research is a good idea. The benefits of it is just amazing because it helps save the lives of people. Taking the lives of an embyros is wrong in my opinion, though, I think most everybody agrees with that. I do not think it is right to have a child just to save your sick child. They will just end up turning agaist the parent, and you can do nothing about it. You can't make someone do something that they do not want to do!

It is curious to me, with all the debate on ES (embryonic stem) cells in the past 20 years, why a few important details are usually left out in this discussion.

1) Few people have issue with couples seeking help from fertility clinics in the attempt to conceive.

2) In the clinic, a dozen or so eggs are collected and mixed with sperm. After three cell divisions, each has become a ball of 2x2x2=8 identical cells. A few of these embryos are implanted, and the rest frozen, in the highly likely event that it won't work the first time.

3) Once pregnant, there are a few options for those that remain:

a) Throw them away (destroy an embryo).
b) Donate them to research (destroy an embryo).
c) Leave them in the freezer

In the latter case, millions of abandoned embryos currently awaiting a uterus donor.

It is important to point out that an embryo is not a fetus. A fetus is made of billions of specialized cells, arranged into tissues, and cannot exist without a womb.

i think hat the use of stem cells is a very good idea. even though there may beasome risks involved when using them, the rewards are totally worth it. If your dying, i don't think you care about what is "ethical" so much as what will save your life. even though it may be unethical, letting people die when we know a cure is both unethical and inhumane. so the next time that you think its wrong to use them, think about how wrong it is to let someone die even though you know a cure.

This research will help us understand the stem cells better, and even cure sick, and maybe very young people. In my opinion, killing a baby for scientific reasons is not right. I don't think it is fair for the baby to be killed. When we use the embryo, we are choosing between two lives. We are deciding whether or not we should take the life of a baby or a patient. I think it would be unfair to choose a life over a life. I think scientist should be able to do research on stem cells. It may result to a cure for many sicknesses that many humans die from. I think it’s a really good idea if scientist can find a cure for cancer by studying this. It would also make us humans more knowledgeable about what goes on inside our bodies. It could also help us to be a lot healthier. If we put newer healthier cells into our body’s it may affect our children, who knows if it will be good or bad though. What if something goes wrong with the cells when the cells make new DNA for a baby inside the mother? I think it should only be done for serious conditions, not for looks. I don’t like the idea that they have to use a life of a baby; it’s not fair to the newborn . But if the baby was going to die anyways, I think it would be acceptable.

As with a lot of technological advances these days, everything has their goods and bads. It'd be great if we are able to cure many diseases in the future once we gain a larger knowledge about stem cells, but at the same time, if the stem cells were to fall into the wrong hands, and people are using it to control others, it would be dangerous.
The dangers such as tumors growing from the stem cells is also a dangerous aspect. They can cause even more severe problems to the patient. Another thing to mention is using embryos. It's unethical- there's no doubt about it. So, unless if the scientists are able to find a way to keep stem cells from reaching the wrong hands, find a way to prevent tumors to form from them, and get stem cells from other places, I believe that scientists should not continue with stem cell research. Sorry, but they should deal with the problems that may arise in the future first- prevent what can be prevented.

I believe that killing an undeveloped embryo is wrong and is unethical. However, stem cell research could be very beneficial to overall health and science in general. What I believe should be done is that we take an embryo that had been successful in stem cell surgery before and compare it to other types of cells that do not belong to an embryo, finding out which cells work under which circumstances. I believe that through stem cell research people could change the way we live, and you have to wonder, are we meant to do just that? I feel that trying to lead the human race to perfection could lead to things that our bodies were not initially developed to do, and that we should not try to make Stem Cell research too complex. Yet, if stem cell research is the key to the removal of cancer, brain damage, paralysis, and other disabilities in our body, then we should use Stem Cell research, just use it carefully.

In our society these days, almost anything can be turned into an ethical issue if a negative aspect of a topic gets enough attention. Though I agree that stem cell research can stride into the future of applied medicine, there are many idiosyncrasies that can be talked about. For example, the source of the stem cells; if an adult willingly donates stem cells, there isn't much of an issue. However, stem cells taken from a fetus, even with the parents' approval, is not within the control of the child. An embryo can't voice its opinions, and it seems more ethical to gain access to stem cells via an adult's decision. If there aren't enough people who are willing to be donors to scientific study, then mankind is not ready for this research. Though it remains a slight problem that a stem cell placed for example in the liver may not respond with existing liver cells. While this technology is still a hit or miss, with enough willing donors for stem cells, this is definitely a research worth looking into.

Stem cells can replace non working cells and help the patient to another level. I believe stem cells are a great benefit as long as the patient knows his/her consequences, for example if the body sees those stem cells as not one of them so it wont respond positively and possibly cause tumors.

Stem cells present a serious debate about life. Yet, it's ironic that people will fight for a life that hasn't been born. Yes it could become the next Martin Luther King Jr., but it could also become the next Hitler. There's not telling, but giving the stem cells to other people will create a much better end than just waiting to see what will happen to the baby. Even Machiavelli presents the idea that leaders must make small sacrifices (what may seem to be the wrong thing) to gain a better end.
The end will be much better considering the advantages. We can replace tissue damaged by radiation therapy. It can counter-effect the negative impacts of cancer. There are disadvantages but what medicine doesn't? Even so, those disadvantages can be fixed by exploring and researching stem cells. Society will never get anywhere worrying about every little thing that might happen. It just doesn't allow for any progress for human life.
Yes, it's hard to predict if the benefits we predict will come true but we must go through with it so that society won't fall behind. There are millions of lives to be saved.

Individuals argue that this can harm someone's body, making tumors, but people that undergo this treatment are at their own risk. They are responsible for the outcomes of the treatment. If stem cells are being taken from fertilized eggs, it destroys what would have become an infant. Not only that, but there is a chance the stem cells would form a tumor. The cells would also have to be able to cooperate with the body's original cells. If any of the following went wrong, then stem cells would cause more harm compared to benefits. With the chances that the stem cells can cause harm, I believe they should not continue stem cell research unless they find a way for the research to be safer. As was stated in the article, the information that could be gained through this research could help many people. It can provide new opportunities for these individuals, opportunities that they wouldn’t have otherwise.

One of the reasons people have to oppose this is that it’s unethical to use embryos for this research. While I agree that it seems wrong to use embryos that might become babies for experimentation. But I also believe that the decision should be left to the donor. If the parent of this embryo wishes to donate it to science, then it is up to them. Since they are not being forced to do it, I think whatever their decision is should be a fair one that was thought over for a long time. Since it’s okay with the donor, it’s okay with me. However, I think the use of human embryos is perfectly fine, as long as they have not matured, or developed a brain or heart. Is it inhumane to eat a carrot if it has no feelings or thoughts?

I think we should be able to expand the study of stem cells and be able to educate others. Although there can be some "technical challenges", stem cell research can open new doors to the world of science. Stem cells can be used to grow tissues to test the effects of drugs and chemicals, but they can also be used to replace healthy cells that are killed by radiation. Evidently helping cure cancer with out the loss of cells and taking science further into the future.

I think that Stem Cell Research could be extremely helpful in the future and that so many people could be cured of diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. "When transplanted into an organism, many embryonic stem cells tend to form tumors," tells me that a lot of research is yet to be done. Before stem cells are used for such complicated purposes, there should be enough research done that people can actually trust it, because many problems may occur. Even though I am not to crazy about embryos being used as stem cells, they have been donated from a person that does not need them for anything. Females produce more eggs in their body than can ever be born, anyway. By donating the embryos, lives can be saved. "The delivery of stem cells to targeted tissues can be complex... And once delivered, stem cells must “learn” to work with other cells," also tells me that some work needs to be done to cure these fatal diseases, but that's what the scientists are there for.

I think that stem cell research is a good idea and very beneficial. There has been much research on this topic making it a reliable way to cure diseases, such as cancer. I am not keen on the idea of using embryos. However, I believe that if the embryos have been donated by a willing source and aren’t damaged during the process then they are ok to use.

I think stem cell research could be very helpful in the future. Stem cell transplants can cure people with cancer, injuries, and Alzheimer's disease so patient don't have to take high prescription medicine that is bad for you. I don't think embryonic stem cell treatment is okay because it's killing a baby. None of the other stem cell treatments is killing anything, some cells are just taken out of you which is not harmful to your body.Stem cell treatment and research should continue because it can treat patients even cure some and get rid of their disease.

i think that stem cell research is a good idea and that everyone should know about it. Even though there is a chance that our body might not be able to adapt to the stem cells our body already produces something that could keep us away from harm. I think that as long the stem cells doesn't effect us harmfuly, then it would be a good idea.It is also a good idea because there are many people out there who have problems with there cells and tissues. In addition, this cure would be a good chance to help people have a good life again. so I VOTE YES. :)

I believe that stem cell research is a ingenious solution to some of the diseases that are present in modern society. Things such as various cancers and deformities could be solved by this radical new medical science. It gives people who we previously said had no chance, a second chance at life. Although the thought of embryotic stem cell surgery may seem at bit savage, we're just doing away with a being who's life has not even been determined yet! I don't know how other people feel about it, but I feel that both varieties of stem cell research are completely humane, and only create a positive benefit towards those who are alive and really need it.

I think that this is a great way to have a powerful understanding of the stem cell and the many diffrent way this can be used. I also want insurance to cover the stem cell use in very life threatening procidures.

In my opinion I think stem cell research is more than ok. Im not a big fan of people stateing that we shouldnt use the womans embryo because its like killing a person, but when is the embryo considered a person? and in there deffence the "person" we are "killing" would not even be made if it were not for them creating it. no i am not a fan of abortion but i am a huge fan of saving lives by using an embryo. also try telling some one who needs the help of stem cell research that its wrong, or put youself in that position where later in the futer we can clone lungs and hearts just to save your life. would u say im sorry but I refuse to let you kill an egg. I dont think so.

Stem cell research is a good thing for medical use and living organisms.I believe that stem cell research is right as long as no one gets hurt in the process, and it can help people that got cancer.

Based on my reality and way of thinking, my mind tells me that it is a pretty good idea of the creation of stem cells, as it helps people very much and may cure cancer... but, It just doesn't feel right to me, to develope an embrion, a future human being, just to kill it and use it as a tool. If there was another way of creating these stem cells, then I would totally agree to it.

i think stem change is a good ides to us because it could find a cure to cancer and other disease/illness.It helps with organ and bone marrow transplants. On the other hand I also believe that it is wrong to kill an embryo.

I Think that the stem cell can help and save other people life's but then there's other problems that can occur like forming tumors. The stem cells can fixes some and gives people other side affects to by doing transpants.

I think stem cell researches can be really helpful because if they can find a cure of using stem cells that can be really great. I dont't know how other peole fell about it but this is actually just my opinion. Also finding a cure for diseases using stem cells can help the whole world.

As a Christian I agree with the idea that it is extremely wrong to kill a child just for the benefit of others. On the other hand I see the benefit of others. The scientists working with the International Society of Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) have come up with guidelines for hESC Research. Here is that link

i think that scientist should do stem cell research

The science of stem cell research is still in it's infancy. Everyday scientists are increasing thier knowledge on how to harvest and use stem cells for research and perhaps someday cures. In fact, the study of adult stem cell research is proving to have good results especially if the stem cells harvested belong to those of the patient. Why not further our understanding of this more ethical use of adult stem cells, see where it takes us and how much we can be done for the good of all human kind without sacrificing the unborn? Wouldn't that be a more ethical applied science?

i think stem cells should be made so there not taking them from embryo's.
